Taking a large TV on a road trip, moving house, or shipping it abroad can feel like a nightmare. The screen is fragile, the box is bulky, and the stakes are high – one cracked panel and you’re out a lot of money. The good news? With a few simple steps you can protect your TV, save time, and avoid costly repairs. Below are the basics you need to know before you load that big screen onto a vehicle.

Packing Your Large TV Right

Start with the original box if you still have it. It’s molded to the TV’s dimensions and includes protective foam that cushions the corners. If the box is gone, find a sturdy cardboard case that’s at least two inches larger on every side. Line the bottom with a thick blanket, moving pad, or foam sheets.

Next, wrap the screen with bubble wrap or a moving blanket. Keep the material snug but not too tight – you want a cushion that absorbs shocks, not one that squeezes the screen. Secure the wrap with packing tape, but avoid taping directly to the TV surface.

Fill the gaps between the TV and the box walls with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or more blankets. The goal is to prevent the TV from shifting during transport. Finally, seal the box with strong packing tape, reinforcing all seams.

Transport and Handling on the Go

When loading the TV into a vehicle, keep it upright. Lying a large screen flat can cause the screen to flex and crack. Use a dolly or hand truck with strap holders to move the box safely. If you don’t have a dolly, enlist a friend to help lift – always lift with your legs, not your back.

Secure the TV in the vehicle by anchoring it to the seat belts or cargo straps. Place it against a solid surface like the back of a seat, and make sure the straps run over the top of the box, not around the sides where they might slip.

If you’re shipping the TV, choose a carrier that offers "fragile" handling and insurance. Mark the box with "This Side Up" and "Fragile" stickers, and include a clear contact number in case the carrier needs to verify the shipment.
